My love for Kerala and the Kasavu

My obsession with Kerala started quite young, so young that one might think it would have faded from my mind a long time ago. But little did people know that the memories of listening to  stories about its splendid beauty with its picturesque lush green vegetation of coconut trees, sparkling palm-fringed beaches, soft gleaming white sands, unending stretches' of turquoise back waters, breathtaking hill stations and waterfalls  along with its rich culture and heritage was etched in my soul for eternities to come.

Having studied in a reputed 'Malayali' Convent with my 'mallu' teachers had a substantial impact on the way I felt about Kerala, and it continued way after I finished my schooling.  I distinctly remember growing up, watching and admiring my 'mallu' teachers for their silky smooth glossy complexion and their thick, long, black hair which always had an earthy fragrance of coconut oil, something that they proudly attributed to 'perks of being born a malayali'. I still remember asking my mom innocently what would it take for me to become a 'mallu'. The way they spoke about their 'cheta-chechis' and their famous puttu and kadala curry, karimeen polichadhu,  aila meen thenga choru(just to name a few) made me realize how much they missed their respective hometowns. My undying quest to explore this little paradise, as people would call it as 'God's own country' started right there at that moment.

But what exactly piqued my interest at that tender age is that everytime there was any festive occasion, they would always come to school clad in this aesthetically appealing cream coloured saree embellished with golden zari border( which later on I came to know it  as the Kerala traditional kasavu saree  )with their hair tied loosely and with a hint of chandan on their foreheads which made them look angelic and simplistically divine. The ethereal beauty of the kasavu though simple carried a whole lot of elegance that wooed women of all ages, religions , old school connoisseurs and daring fashionistas alike and I wondered when it would be my turn to dress up in this timeless classic and I knew when I do so  I ll cherish it for years to come.

Now that I am all grown up, times have changed, my interests, likes and dislikes, my whole perception of the entire world has changed, but my undying love for this beautiful destination and of course the kasavu has cascaded to a whole new level that it sometimes overwhelms me beyond a certain point. Sitting on the shores of Cherai solitarily with  the sea water from the  soft waves seemingly caressing not jus my barefoot but my whole quintessence  while watching the beautiful sunset ahead of me with nothing but an occasional crab to keep me company, I think of the beautiful kasavu that lies on my bed waiting to be adorned and it takes me back to me being Just a little school girl standing in awe of my 'mallu' teachers clad in the gorgeous masterpiece called the KASAVU
